The Book Headboard - DIY

Friday, July 17th, 2009

If you think this headboard looks beautiful and would fit nicely in your bedroom, then you probably want to take the time to make your own piece. This is not bought from any local or online furniture stores but made from scratch. To get you started to work on this headboard, you should prepare the following things:

- Collection of book covers as this serves as the core of the headboard. If you do not have the used ones, you can buy them at thrift stores
- Special glues that can stick to wood and paper strongly
- polyurethane spray
- Picture hanging strips
-A large sheet of smooth plywood that is about 1/4 inch thick

The detailed instructions can be found here. As always, you do not need to follow every single step but want to customize the process a bit to make it unique for your bedroom

Nice Veneer Platform Bed

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

The color and the exterior of this bed itself show you what this bed is made of. The wood bed is made of natural Veneer and comes with 2 matching nice looking nightstands. Veneer represents thin slices of wood and it is usually less than 1/8 inch. If we put three or more layers of veneer together, it will become a plywood. Although the bed itself is only available in cherry finish, you still have the option for different color combination for the Headboard.

Mattress for Your Platform Bed

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Although you can sleep directly on the surface of a platform bed, it is always suggested that you add a mattress for extra comfort.

When you start shopping for the matters, you need to decide which mattress you want to buy. There are inner spring, latex and memory foam mattress. Well, there is no such a rule saying you should buy one type but rather it is a personal preference. My suggestion is to lay down on different types of mattresses and buy the one you feel most comfortable.

Once you decided the type of you wanted, you should think about how much you plan to spend. I suggest you spend as much as possible because a good night sleep is just critical. I can tell you it is much better than any types of energy drinks.

At last, don’t forget to check the warranty on the mattress as some special conditions may not be covered by warranties.

Get the Right Mattress Size for Your Bed

Monday, July 6th, 2009

This may sounds like a stupid question to ask: What size mattress is best for your bed? A lot of people actually bought the mattress size smaller than they actually needed. Buying a too-small mattress is a big mistake. A couple may think that a “double” is fine but they usually didn’t realize that they have much less space left for sleeping at night.

The simple tip is “buy more size than you think you actually need”. This will always give you more space and whoever sleeps on the mattress will enjoy much more sleeping space which is essential for a good night’s sleep.

Best Wood for Bed Slats

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

When you start to build a platform bed yourself, have you ever thought about the best type of wood you would use for slats? There are lots of houses/building centers that will sell you what they call “pine” but are really spruce/pine. You really should ask for “# 2 southern yellow pine”, which is one of the strongest woods around. So it makes your bed more reliable and it will definitely last much longer.

Another option is to use DF as it is one of the strongest softwoods you can buy - it has a very high modulus of elasticity and is often specified for high load applications in beams and joists. DF is stronger than spruce, larch, southern or yellow pine, and far better than cedar or redwood.
